Cock and Bottle [Morden]

The Cock and Bottle is described as a traditional Dorset long house and, as a result, has a long history known to date back over 400 years. That history strikes you the moment you walk in through the door and it hard to think of a more 'traditional' Dorset village country pub. Despite its age and history it has been very tastefully modernised with a very nice extension added not that long ago. The staff call it the conservatory but that is a bit misleading in print, it is nothing like a conservatory you put on the side of you house. Views from the conservatory are across fields and hedgerows; quite relaxing.

The Cock and Bottle has an excellent reputation and has won various awards. It is what it is, a Dorset village pub but it punches above its weight in a culinary sense. Although the menu is not the most extensive it certainly has something to suit most tastes and what they do have on the menu is always good and well presented. I say again, this is not a top class restaurant, it is a top class Dorset village pub!

I have to confess being a bit addicted to the chicken curry and now rarely have anything else there. Now chicken curry might sound a bit ordinary but the chef at the Cock and Bottle adds some nice touches to make it a bit different. One thing I like about it is that it does not pretend to be anything other than a 'chicken curry'. Some pubs will advertise chicken Madras or massala or balti or something else grand and when you get it is nothing like the 'authentic' dish you would get in your local Indian restaurant and this can lead to disappointment but when you order a plain, straight forward, chicken curry and get something a bit different and very tasty your expectations are surpassed and your satisfaction increased.

The Cock and Bottle is only a ten minute drive from where we live and so we are quite regular visitors and it certainly one of our favourite five.

The downsides? I find it hard to think of one to be honest. Some meals can take a while (about 30 minutes) to be prepared which might irritate those wanting fast food but, frankly, I would rather wait and have something freshly prepared than have something warmed up and out of the kitchen in ten minutes. The staff will tell you if your order is going to take that little bit longer so you have the chance to change your mind!
