Nunnery Mead Nature Reserve

Nunnery Mead: one for the enthusiast -

I was a bit unlucky with my visit to Nunnery Mead Reserve as I arrived just a few days after the grass in meadows was cut. I am sure if I had arrived a little earlier in the year my species list would have been much longer. I also found that access to the woodland fringe along the river where much of the interest in the reserve lies was inaccessible due to overgrowth making access to the styles almost impossible. One of the styles looked broken as well. That said, Nunnery Mead is a lovely setting. It is just west of the River Frome near Frampton and it takes a little walk from Southover to reach it. Once you get there there is a small farm but nothing else in view other than a large house on the hill some distance away.

If, like me, you like your countryside peaceful then Nunnery Mead is certainly that. Nunnery Mead consists of a couple of large damp meadows and they can be quite wet at times and I wore wellies for my visit although the long dry spell we have had meant it was not at all difficult to walk but I still think it was the right thing to do.

I would say Nunnery Mead is one for the enthusiast rather than the casual wildlife watcher!
