Piddles Wood Nature Reserve

Piddles Wood: something for everyone -

Dorset does not have a lot of deciduous woodland; it is a county of chalk downs, limestone cliffs and purple heaths. However, what natural woodland there is is superb and Piddles Wood is as good an area of ancient oak woodland and hazel coppice that you will find anywhere. In spring it is full of woodland flowers, in summer insects abound (including white admiral and silver-washed fritillary and in autumn it is, of course, fungi.

It is always worth a visit, it is shear joy for both the amateur naturalist and the casual observer. I love the place, it is a shame it is a bit of a trek from where I live or I would go there more often. Once a Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve, the wood is now managed by Natural England who have brought in the Forestry Commission to remove the alien conifer species in the wood. This only affects part of the wood and does not really have an impact on one's enjoyment and it does mean the wood will become an even greater asset to future generations as native species colonise the cleared areas.

There is a small, free car park which seems to be rarely used and we seldom see anyone else in the wood when we are there.
