Eight Acre Wood Local Nature Reserve

Eight Acre Wood: a surprise in Bovington -

Eight acre wood is a small fragment of ancient woodland that has survived despite the development of Bovington army camp, school and housing. It was obviously once part of a much bigger woodland area, most of which has been lost. There is local housing nearby which means that it is a popular walk, especially with dogs and I encountered several during my first visit, they were all very friendly as were their owners! To the credit of the locals, I may have encountered several dogs but I did not actually encounter any dog mess so it is obviously a much loved spot amongst those who live nearby. The area was once extensively coppiced and many hazel trees can be found but from their size I would think that coppicing ceased some thirty or more years ago. Standard oaks and ash are present along with a substantial amount of holly and rowan. The bluebells are fine although not to the standard you can find in some Dorset woods! A pleasant walk but not that much to see from the natural history perspective perhaps.
