Fifehead Wood: Dorset rain forest! -

There are very few woodlands in north Dorset and around the Blackmore Vale area and so Fifehead Wood stands alone in what is beautiful gentle green countryside. Not only does it stand alone as the only real wooded area for miles it is quite unique as a woodland. The soil in the Blackmore Vale is heavy clay and even in dry times can be very wet in places and Fifehead Wood is certainly very wet in the lower areas. If you visit take your wellies, even at the height of summer!

It is a long thin woodland, I don't think that is an unfair description. It is primarily broad leaf with an almost impenetrable under-story of bramble and scrub making it something of a jungle! Given that it is damp, as I have said, on a hot summers day it feels a bit a tropical rain forest! Despite the thick scrub there are well defined paths to follow through the wood and lots of flowers to see as well as insects. I went looking for white admiral but sadly dipped out on that but I felt the long journey from Purbeck to the northern edge of the county was well worth it, I really loved Fifehead Wood and I will make my way there again one day.

Just for the record this is a Woodland Trust reserve and it is well cared for by them; thanks Woodland Trust!
