Trailway (Sturminster Newton)

Trailway (Sturminster Newton): along with the River Stour -

Riversides and redundant railways are both wonderful habitat types, each providing an abundance of flowers and, therefore, in late summer lots of insects. This walk, then, is one of my favourites as it combines both of these. It is just a shame it is not closer to home or you could find me wandering around this area near Sturminster Newton quite frequently.

The car park in Sturminster Newton is easy to find and is on the site of the old station. The Trailway sets off eastwards from there. After a mile you can leave the Trailway and walk down to Fiddleford Mill and from there make you way back along the river bank and then through 'downtown' Stur'!

This is a pleasant walk at any time of year but is especially delightful in early June when there is an amazing display of meadow buttercups in the water meadows alongside the river. By mid-summer you can expect to see several species of butterflies as well as damsels and dragons! Mayflies are abundant at times and this is often the best time to see birds.
